Whether you are a musicmaker or work in the music industry, you have probably heard about Amanda Palmer. If you haven’t, you may have been watching too much TV or spending too much time on Facebook.

In short, Amanda Palmer is the artist behind the most successful crowdfunded music project to date. She asked for $100,000 and ended up raising nearly $1.2 million from around 25,000 supporters. Not bad, huh?

Last month, the artist was invited to give a TED talk and I think that the video is definitely a must-watch for every contemporary musician:

Forget about ugly websites! Your page could look like this on myband.is

By , on , in myband.is news, Web Services, 7 Replies

As we have said before, myband.is is a new instrument that allows musicians make their own websites as if by magic.

You sign up, tell myband.is what your social networks are, choose the design details and within minutes, your band has an official site.

When we started the project, we thought an infographic was a good way to explain it. Today, after several months of work, we found the easiest way of all: giving examples.

The pages

We chose 10 bands and designed a page for each of them. We took the content of their social network profiles and tried out various design options. We used exactly the same tools as you will be able to use to create your myband.is page to give you an idea of how it could look.

Needless to say, here are 10 examples of what you can do when creating your page on myband.is:

1. BrotherBrother

myband.is/brotherbrother

2. Gary Clark Jr.

myband.is/garyclarkjr

3. Estados Alterados

myband.is/estadosalterados

4. Poliça

myband.is/polica

5. Sidestepper

myband.is/sidestepper

6. Superlitio

myband.is/superlitio

7. The Plasticos

myband.is/theplasticos

8. The phenomenal handclap band

myband.is/phenomenalhandclapband

9. The honorable south

myband.is/thehonorablesouth

10. Zoë Keating

What’s your word?

Too good to be free, I hear you say? Use the comments box below to leave your feedback or ask any questions you have.

The pages are cool, and the application will be easy to use and the best of all, it will be free! Don’t wait any longer and sign up to get early access before it is available to the rest of the world.

It’s going well. While we keep working on the site, you keep making music :)

Festival Centro, musicians and the internet

By , on , in Music Festivals, Leave a reply

From January 18 to 22 I had the pleasure of attending the Festival Centro (Downtown Festival) 2012 in Bogota. Five days of music with a lineup of 34 artists from around the world, to start off the concert season in the Colombian capital.

My favorite bands from the festival were: Cápsula, We Are Scientists and Monsieur Periné. I was impressed by their stage presence, their connection with fans and their charisma. I also enjoyed seeing Papaya Republik and Ana Tijoux, unfortunately I missed Crew Peligrosos from Medellin.

Monsieur Perine @ Festival Centro 2012

I went to the Festival with a one question interview: what do you thank the internet for? I’m writing this post to share the responses I received from the bands and to start the conversation about the things that artists are grateful to the internet for.

The iTunes Store is without a doubt the most successful online channel for music distribution out there at the moment. With over 20 million songs (not to mention movies, games and other content), the original idea that Steve Jobs created in 2003, has finally made it to Latin America.

As of December 13, users in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela can buy from the iTunes Store in each of their countries. Continue reading
